LAUSD Healthy Schools Campaign
Created in 2010, the annual LAUSD Healthy Schools Campaign is a partnership with LAUSD Beyond the Bell that brings nutrition education to 16,000 elementary, middle and high school students. In 800 District schools, students participate in six nutrition workshops after school and receive educational materials printed in English and Spanish.
Students take the materials home and complete a Students Teaching Families activity by reviewing what they learned with a parent or guardian and brainstorming healthy changes they can make together. Participants are also invited to create a poster for the district-wide Healthy Messages Poster Contest. Student posters are displayed in the schools to promote healthy living to the entire school community. Program staff and community members vote on the winners.
The Healthy Schools Campaign culminates in the annual Poster Contest Awards Dinner, where the finalists and their families, staff members and community leaders gather to recognize the students’ achievements. Contest winners receive fun prizes that encourage physical activity, including Disneyland tickets, a new bicycle or a $100 sports store gift card.
