Imagine HEALTH began in 2006 as the ShapeUp Program, a 12-week nutrition and fitness mentoring program. ShapeUp was renamed Imagine HEALTH in 2014, when SOSMentor added mindfulness and stress-reduction to the curriculum after partnering with Dr. Marc Weigensberg, an integrative health researcher at USC Keck School of Medicine.
For the first six weeks of the 12-week program, high school students participate in twice weekly after school nutrition and fitness workshops. A Registered Dietitian, Dietetic Intern and volunteer mentors from the community guide students through the curriculum, which covers mindful eating and stress-reduction in addition to our regular nutrition curriculum.
In the final six weeks of the program, the high school students mentor younger kids at a nearby elementary or middle school, honing their leadership skills as they pass on their new knowledge. This “train-the-trainer” mentoring model reinforces the information for the high school students and inspires the younger students to follow their example.
