Take Action for a Healthy School Community
The Take Action Program is a school-based, year-long nutrition, yoga and environmental change program for middle school students and their parents. It incorporates key elements of the SNaX (Students for Nutrition and Exercise) curriculum, a research-based obesity prevention program developed by Los Angeles Unified School District and researchers at UCLA, RAND and Harvard. SOSMentor also partnered with Teresa Power, yoga instructor and author of The ABCs of Yoga for Kids, to incorporate yoga in the Take Action curriculum.
After assessing their school’s specific needs, students in the Take Action Program generate environmental change projects to create healthy improvements to their school environment. Projects include fundraising for a permanent, cold-water hydration station, hosting healthy food tasting fairs, planting a school garden, and lobbying the school for input on the foods served at lunch.
