SOSMentor’s mission is to empower underserved youth to make healthy choices. We deliver innovative nutrition and fitness education that inspires kids to advocate for health in their schools, families, and communites.
SOSMentor is a local, nonprofit organization that empowers underserved students to make healthy eating choices, live an active lifestyle and become health advocates in their communities. Mentor middle or high school students this Fall semester--teach them about health and wellness, encourage them to act as role models and make healthy improvements to their schools, and give them and their families hope for a healthier future.

POSITION AVAILABLE

Program Assistant (Undergraduate or Graduate Student) Hours flexible

Imagine HEALTH - This innovative program uses guided imagery and peer mentoring to instill healthy habits in high school students. Mentor students as they learn about nutrition and exercise, and prepare them to teach elementary school students what they’ve learned. After school 3:30 - 5:00 in East Los Angeles.
Take Action - Assist lead teachers at school sites in teaching nutrition and physical activity. Help train “Student Ambassadors” who will create service projects and school-wide events and activities that improve their school’s policies and environment.  Flexible hours in the San Fernando Valley during school hours (8-4pm).
Healthy Athletes Program - Teach a 20-minute lesson on sports nutrition to school sports teams. After school in Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley (3-5pm).

Fundraising Coordinator (Graduate Student) 400 Hours
Working under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Coordinator will also assist in researching grant/donation/sponsorship opportunities, tracking deadlines, and writing reports.

Work 1 - 3 hours at the school site 1-2 days/week, and additional hours from home and the SOSMentor office in Calabasas.
Act as liaison between your assigned school sites and SOSMentor office
Teach programs using provided curriculum as needed
Assist with curriculum revision and development as needed
Assist with curriculum revision and development as needed
Maintain program data information including: administrating, collecting, and inputting for evaluation purposes
Take video and pictures and post to our social media sites
Collect student stories for highlighting in social media and recognizing at our Honoree Luncheon
Maintain documents needed for reporting, such as attendance records and pre and post testing
Assist teacher and mentor middle and high school students to make healthier choices
Assist with fundraising efforts as needed
Passion for health and fitness and/or educating underserved children
Experience working with kids is a plus
Access to a computer with a wireless connection for work at home
Strong writing, research, and communication skills
Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of SOSMentor and the potential funder, and use that knowledge and understanding to better comprehend all projects and programs for which grants/donations/sponsorships will be sought.
Research grant-making organizations and analyze them to identify likely funding sources for specific projects and programs based on SOSMentor needs.
Compile, write, and edit all grant applications exhibiting strong expository writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and spelling.
Develop individual grant proposals in accordance with each grant-making organization's preferences and follow exactly each grant-making organization's guidelines
Preparation of proposals, sponsorship requests, fundraising, and grant applications.
Maintain program data information including: administrating, collecting, and inputting for evaluation purposes
responsible, professional and administrative work in researching, identifying, developing and responding to public and private grant opportunities based on client's needs.
Self-starter, keen attention to detail, professional tact, affinity for technology, and highly deadline driven.
Passion for health and fitness and/or educating underserved children
